The talk will focus on spin physics in semiconductors, including a historical overview (starting with the pioneering studies of the sixties and seventies) and recent developments aimed at the realization of spintronic devices. Experimental methods for studying spin properties in semiconductors will be discussed, as well as the role of deposition/fabrication techniques, which enable the realization of nanostructured samples (ultrathin films, quantum wells, multilayers). Topics such as electron spin injection and spin relaxation times will be addressed. Special emphasis will be given to optical methods and Group IV semiconductors, a research field in which my group at the Department of Physics is particularly active.
